The 171 Project

The 171 Project is an abstinence based structured day programme which clients join for 6 weeks. It is financed through sponsorship.

It's good to talk! At 171 we have four sessions of group therapy a week. In group therapy members are encouraged to share their experience in relation to remaining abstinent from alcohol and or drugs. Peer group therapy allows group members to share their experience with each other in a friendly, encouraging and non-judgemental manner which helps to break down the isolation of addiction and creates a safe space. Group members encourage and learn from each other along the road to recovery and witness reaching milestones of recovery. It also allows members to practice social skills in a supportive, non-judgemental and confidential setting.

We also use a mind-body skill called Mindfulness using techniques such as meditation, breathing practices and yoga. The practice allows us to become more aware of our thoughts and feelings and thus manage response to these and addictive and compulsive behaviours.

Other workshops include:

an optional music club which encourages people to listen without prejudice.

Psycho-educational workshops which include elements from cognitive-behavioural therapy. The aim of these workshops is to enable clients to discover how their thinking style impacts upon their behaviour and close relationships. Topics such as motivation, relapse prevention, problem solving, relationship skills, lifestyle balance, helpful and unhelpful beliefs, impulse control, anger management and core values.

Art Therapy is a type of confidential psychotherapy where making art and talking can go together to help nurture individual growth, awareness and healing.

Photography Group is an opportunity to get out and about and learn a new skill. We go on trips to exhibitions, photo studios and learn how to use Photoshop. No experience is required.

DASH is an NHS service offering a holistic and expert approach to drug treatment. We offer non-judgemental help, understanding and a little bit of guidance in a warm and welcoming environment. DASH offers alternative therapies like Acupressure, psychological treatments, key work, a wide range of group therapy, access to detox day programs and rehabs. We offer a needle exchange, specialist blood borne virus services and substitute prescribing. We host NA and SMART meetings and we offer advice surgeries on benefits, housing and legal issues. Service users say that they feel our service has a warm environment, is friendly and encourages active participation in how the staff plan and offer treatment. We have a duty of care to support your individual needs and help you work towards your continued changes.

A service user's version

It takes courage to come through this door, or any door when one is tackling addiction and recovery in every shape and form. As a client I feel DASH has a reasonable holistic approach which is having a very positive outcome. This ranges from heavy Class A drugs and all other drugs, many types of dual or poly addictions and diagnosis. If the staff feel that this is not the right service for the person they helpfully put you in touch with the appropriate service.

As clients we are not forgotten about after our treatment and there is after care available. Some clients choose to join the theatre group or maybe the gardening group in our Atrium. Reception is the first point of contact and no matter how difficult some people can be, they never seem to be short of a smile and words of encouragement.
